When was the last time you actually looked at your garage and thought, “I have plenty of space”?
For many homeowners, the garage slowly becomes a catch-all for everything that doesn’t have a place inside the house. Boxes, camping gear, tools, decorations, bikes, lawn equipment, and old furniture can quickly turn an open space into a maze.
Instead of spending an entire weekend cleaning, try the 10-minute garage test.
Step 1: Look Around
Spend two minutes simply looking at your garage.
Can you easily walk from one side to the other? Can you reach the items you use regularly? Is there room to park your vehicle?
If the answer to any of those questions is no, your garage may be working more as a storage room than a functional part of your home.
Step 2: Find the Items You Rarely Use
Spend the next three minutes identifying things you don’t use regularly.
Look for:
- Holiday decorations
- Seasonal clothing
- Camping equipment
- Extra furniture
- Old boxes and keepsakes
- Lawn and outdoor equipment
- Sports gear
- Items you’re saving for the future
You don’t necessarily need to get rid of these things. You just need to decide whether your garage is the best place for them.
Step 3: Ask One Question
For each item, ask:
“Do I need this within easy reach?”
If you use something every week, keeping it accessible makes sense.
If you only use it once or twice a year, it may be taking up valuable space that could be used for something else.
Step 4: Imagine Your Garage Without the Clutter
Now imagine what your garage could look like if those rarely used items were somewhere else.
Could you park your car inside? Could you finally set up a workbench? Would it be easier to grab your bikes or camping gear? Could you actually walk around without stepping over boxes?
Sometimes creating more space isn’t about getting rid of your belongings. It’s about storing them somewhere that makes more sense.
